Walking The Brooklyn Bridge

To walk across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan: The entrance is at Park Row and Centre Street, across from City Hall Park, east of City Hall. On the walkway be sure to stay on the pedestrian side (south side), as the bicyclists wait for no one!

Subway to the walkway: 4/5/6 to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall or J/M/Z to Chambers St.

Brooklyn entrance: If you're already in Brooklyn and want to walk to the Manhattan side, take the A to High Street. The walkway entrance is next to the Federal Court Building. There are stairs on Cadman Plaza East and Prospect Street or a ramp entrance on Johnson and Adams Streets.

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge takes 20 minutes to an hour depending if you stop and read the informative plaques along the way. The plaques give the bridge's history and also describe sights seen from the bridge as it would have looked to pedestrians in back in 1883 when the bridge opened.

s you walk closer to the Brooklyn side, more plaques provide descriptions of various sites including Ellis Island and Governors Island, a former Coast Guard installation. You'll also see the Statue of Liberty and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. At the Brooklyn side, you'll end up on Adams Street. If you're in a hurry to get back, walk to High Street or Jay Street to catch an A train to Manhattan or you can stroll around pretty Brooklyn Heights for the rest of the day.
